Completed in 1900, this was then the tallest structure in the United Kingdom, being over 567 feet from the ground to the top of the copper ball on the flagstaff. [Blackpool Tower is 518 feet high.] The Tower was illuminated at night; the ballroom was one of the largest in the world, easily accommodating 1,000 couples. Neglected during World War 1, the cost of renovation of the metalwork was considered to be too great and it was subsequently dismantled, the work being completed by 1921. The building with its ballroom was destroyed by fire in 1969.
