Restored after the disastrous fire in 1860, the sailors' Home was reopened in April 1862. As before, accommodation was provided for 340 sailors and the opportunity was taken to effect improvements, such as the provision of bathrooms on each floor. Iron joists were used instead of wood and a new fireproof staircase was installed.
