A locomotive with its tender depicted with an array of first class carriages and livestock carriages. The first class closed carriages of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway can be compared to travelling 'inside' on the stage coach routes. Likewise, second class carriages correspond with travelling 'outside'. As can be seen here, the vehicles drew heavily upon contemporary stage coach practice and were effectively comprised of three squared off bodies joined together, mounted on a frame and wheels. Refinements such as buffers and springs did not emerge until the second generation of carriages.
