'Parkside' was one of the original passenger stations of the famous Liverpool and Manchester Railway, the world's first passenger railway. When the line opened on 15 September 1830, Parkside was chosen as a location for watering facilities as it was located about half way between the two cities. During the opening ceremony at Parkside, William Huskisson MP was killed by a train hauled by The Rocket as he walked down the track to speak to the Duke of Wellington, who had been travelling on another train.
