Capable of adaptation to any site, these pre-fabricated structures were built for the School Board who had decided that they be used as trial schools before more permanent structures were erected. In 1873, two blocks providing accommodation for 400 children were put up in Love Lane and one block with accommodation for 300 children in Mill Street, Toxteth. Constructed in ten feet long sections using American spruce, the exteriors were painted and the interiors were white-washed when erected.
