Bear-baiting is said to have taken place as late as the middle of the 18th century. It was customary on the occasion of the annual election of a Mayor to have a bear baited firstly at the White Cross, then at the Exchange and in Derby Street, concluding at the Stocks Market opposite the top of Pool Lane. The bear was assailed separately by large mastiffs, the most courageous of which being rewarded with a brass collar.
