Civil engineer William Cubitt was engaged by Liverpool Corporation to design the city's first  landing stage, it consisted of a wooden stage measuring 508' x 82', with tapered ends resting on 39 wrought iron pontoons each 80' x10' wide x 6' deep, It was connected to the shore by 2 150' long bridges, was commissioned on 1st June 1847 at a cost of £50,000 and could accommodate 40,000 people.
