In 1650 this was a field known as Lancelot's Croft. It was owned by Sir Edward Moore who in his records describes Thomas Lancelot - after whom the street is named - as 'a drunken idle fellow who scarse ever pay me eather Rent or Hens.' Lancelot's dwelling was said to be 'a fine large croft' and 'for in all Liverpool so nere the watter sid there is none haith so much rome on ye backside.'
