In 1650 Liverpool still consisted of its seven original streets, including Dale Street, Castle Street, Chapel Street and Water Street. Just two years before, in 1648, the first cargo of tobacco arrived from America on board the Friendship, a 30 ton vessel captained by James Jenkinson. This trade with America was instrumental in the subsequent rapid growth of the city. Growth was often  accompanied by pain, such as the death of 200 people in 1851 following an outbreak of the plague.
