This view is taken from a little to the north of Clarence Dock. As early as 1576 horse-racing took place on the North Shore. A year later it is recorded that 'This year, on the holy day of the Ascension, there was a running of horses at Liverpool for a silver bell, given by Mr.Ed.Torbock, to be run for every year under the patronage of the Mayor.' The four mile course was on the shore near Bank Hall.
