The scheme for building the pier was devised by James Atherton of Everton and his son in law Mr Rowson. Formerly, passengers were landed on the shore in large, flat-bottomed boats - most inconvenient and uncomfortable, especially at night and in rough weather. The pier in this drawing was removed in the 1870s.
