Of the several wells in the old town, the main one was the Fall Well on the Great Heath at the top of what was later St John's Lane at the southern end of the site occupied by St George's Hall. When the well was filled in c.1790, the water was diverted to the garden of the residence of William Roe, where it appeared as a fountain for many years. The site of his house later became that of the Stork Hotel, Queen Square.
