Passenger traffic was so heavy that a report spoke apologetically of only being able to convey goods 'with the few engines that can be spared'. The first load of merchandise, weighing 80 tons, was taken from Liverpool to Manchester on 4 December, 1830, by Planet. By the end of the year they had carried 70,000 passengers, with only one slight mishap. The receipts for 1831 from passengers was nearly half a million pounds.
